Artistic Director

Julie Edwardson has established a reputation as one of Australia’s most interesting opera directors. She began her career as a singer and performed many principal roles for Opera Australia. Having long held an ambition to be a Director, she undertook a course at NIDA, then began by assisting directors at OA. After gaining several years experience, she is recognised for her creative breadth, artistic vision and assured direction.

For Opera Australia, Julie Edwardson received critical acclaim as Revival Director of Baz Luhrmann’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2003. In 2004, she was Assistant Director and Revival Director of Neil Armfield’s The Marriage of Figaro and Assistant Director of Batavia for the West Australian Opera and the 2004 Perth International Arts Festival. Her engagements with Opera Australia have also included Assistant Director of Rigoletto, Katya Kabanova, La traviata and the Australian première of Batavia by Richard Mills. In 2005 she directed Hansel and Gretel for Opera Australia, receiving excellent reviews for her work. She also directed Don Giovanni and Carmen at West Australian Opera. In 2006 she again worked as Assistant Director of Batavia for its Sydney season.

As a resident artist with Opera Australia in 1999/2000 Julie Edwardson was Assistant Director of Rigoletto, Die Fledermaus, Madama Butterfly, The Marriage of Figaro and Revival Director of Capriccio and Wozzeck..

Other productions Julie has directed include The Bicycle Couriers for Melbourne University Faculty of Music, Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges and Mozart’s Impresario for the George Limb Opera Company in conjunction with the Canberra School of Music for which she received the Canberra Critics Award. She directed The Merry Widow, Così fan tutteand Rigoletto for Opera Pacific (California), Menotti’s The Telephone for Music Theatre Australia, Software for the Opera Australia Schools Company and co-directed Pergolesi’s La serva padrona for the Melbourne Comedy Festival (1998). Some recent engagements include directing Hansel and Gretel for Opera Queensland, Rigoletto in Macau, The Magic Flute for West Australian Opera and La Traviata for Opera Queensland as well as reviving The Pearl Fishers for West Australian Opera.

In 2010 Julie directed a new production of La Sonnambula for Opera Australia in Melbourne and Sydney and West Australian Opera for which she won the 2011 Green Room Awards for Best Director and Best Production.  Julie also revived Baz Luhrmann’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Opera Australia in Sydney and Melbourne.

This year she returns to State Opera of South Australia to revive her production of La Sonnambula and to West Australian Opera to revive Falstaff.

Julie has her own company, Emotionworks – Cut Opera, which has produced Mozart’s Impresario at the Melbourne Museum. The company has also produced a series of shortened “sight specific” operas in a cross-genre style including Die Flederrmaus, Alcina, The Magic Flute, Così fan tutti and Carmen.  She is planning a Cut Opera festival later this year.

Julie’s 2012 engagements include A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Opera Australia.
