“Alcina and the Witches of Bacharach”

 @ The Shaw Davey,
 171-175 Elgin Street, Carlton

Emotionworks Cut Opera is excited to present our latest creation: Handel’s opera Alcina, cut down to 90 mins and fuelled with the timeless hits of Burt Bacharach – a tribute to the genius of Handel and Bacharach!

The Sorceress Alcina lures her prey to her funky island, the Shaw Davey Slum, seduces them and then turns them into wild beasts. Her latest victim, Ruggiero, is under her spell and Bradamante, his former lover, has come to rescue him. Will they overcome the power of Alcina?

An all star female Cut Opera cast in the baroque tradition of women playing women, women playing men and women playing women pretending to be men!! Get your head around that one!

Starring the beautiful Katy Turbitt as the evil not so beautiful Alcina, Jazz singer extraordinaire Annemarie Sharry as the deluded Ruggiero, powerhouse Kerry Frankland as the gender confused Bradamante, golden girl Rachael Findlay as the feral Oronte and “what’s new pussy cat” Maryanne Bird as the ditzy Morgana!

A wild, fun, rollicking ride is in store for you upstairs at the funky Shaw Davey with retractable roof if weather permits and offering a massive bar and great food options. Another wacky creative opera fusion outburst devised and directed by Julie Edwardson.

Gee we have fun and so will you – Hope to see you all there!

The Magic Flute and the Queens of Rock

Emotionworks Cut Opera presents

The Magic Flute and the Queens of Rock

@ The Line,
 2 Yewers Street, Footscray

28/29 May and 4/5 June, 4pm

flute planet 1 1.29.20-52B_resize

This 90 minute fun-filled interpretation of Mozart’s masterpiece is fused with Freddie Mercury and Elton John classics. The story is adapted to a very familiar sci-fi world of light sabres, singing robots and the fight between good and evil. The post-industrial glam of The Line warehouse venue is the perfect backdrop.

Mozart’s Magic Flute embodies the archetypal tale of the young hero embarking on his quest to save the captive princess and the future of mankind. Remind you of anything? Hopefully the force will be with him!

Tales of Hoffmann Ooh La La

Tales of Hoffmann Ooh La La

A popular French inspired burlesque take on Offenbach’s famous tales of Hoffmann at the cabaret – this is opera fusion!

Our Hoffmann is slashed to 90 minutes and infused with French and French inspired popular songs in this Parisian Jazz Burlesque interpretation.

The story is about the loves of the poet Hoffmann’s life  – unlucky in love as he struggles with the forces of ‘good’ and ‘evil’, truth and deception, the angel and the demon. Not all is as it seems in this sophisticated, wacky and surreal French inspired production.

Devised and directed by award winning director Julie Edwardson and starring our usual array of top line opera and contemporary singers and accompanied by the Cut Opera house combo. Cast includes Hew Wagner (Hoffmann), Katy Turbitt (as Hoffmans lovers), Michael Lampard (Demon) and Kerry Frankland (the Angel Nicklaus).
